Balanced Literacy is a new learning approach that seeks to provide students with individualized reading opportunities while teaching the core fundamentals of reading. With new curriculum comes new language.

- Reading Life: A student's personal reading preference that is built on student interest, student learning needs, and student reading level.
- Reading Level- Each student has a reading level that is suited to meet his/her learning needs. The levels range from A being the start to Z being the highest.
- Reading Stamina- The act/time a student is focused solely on his/her reading to self time.
- Read to self- A designated time during readers workshop that allows a student to read alone.
- Just right book- A book that is on the student's level that a student can fully read fluently and comprehend.
- Conferring- Individualized student/teacher conferences that allow the teacher and student to discuss the students learning growths and areas that he/she can grow in as a reader
